PRESS STATEMENT - BOTSWANA EXECUTION UPDATE (VIII)

FIRST DAY OF HEARING OF DEATH PENALTY CASE - BOTSWANA

At the hearing today (2 August 1999), Judge Reynolds decided to adjourn the case until Wednesday 3 August 1999.

The Attorney General, Phandu Skelemani, had objected to some of the affidavits filed by and on behalf of the applicants. He argued that they had been submitted to him at short notice and that he had not had time to read them all.

Judge Reynolds deeply regretted the adjournment, but recognised the need for the documents to be thoroughly examined before the hearing could proceed.

The legal team of the applicants, Advocates Brian Spilg (SC), David Unterhalter and Attorney Kgafela, did not object to the adjournment.
