PRESS STATEMENT ON THE AFRICAN COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND PEOPLES’ RIGHTS (ACHPR)
ACHPR Appoints Experts to Serve on its Working Group on the Death Penalty
The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) was established in 1986 after its adoption by the Assembly of Heads of State of the then Organization of African Unity (OAU) and now African Union. It is charged with ensuring the promotion and protection of Human and Peoples’ Rights throughout the African continent and also has a treaty monitoring function. Botswana is a member of the ACHPR.
At the ACHPR 40 th Ordinary Session held in Banjul, the Gambia, on 29 November 2006, The Commission elected a six person expert team to serve on its recently established Working Group on the Death Penalty. They are;
Ms Alya Cherif Chammari ( Tunisia);
Ms Alice Mogwe ( Botswana);
Mr Mactar Diallo ( Senegal);
Prof. Phillip Francis Iya ( Uganda);
Prof. Carlson E. Anyangwe ( Cameroon); and
Prof. Mohamed S El-Awa ( Egypt)
DITSHWANELO would like to congratulate the ACHPR on the establishment of a Working Group to deal with the Death Penalty. We also acknowledge the appointment of the expert members who will serve on this Working Group. We would like to wish it success in its work on the Death Penalty in Africa.
