PRESS STATEMENT ON THE INAUGURATION OF HIS EXCELLENCY LIEUTENANT GENERAL SERETSE KHAMA IAN KHAMA AS PRESIDENT OF BOTSWANA

DITSHWANELO WELCOMES PRINCIPLES FOR GOVERNANCE OF BOTSWANA APRIL 1, 2008

DITSHWANELO - the Botswana Centre for Human Rights congratulates His Excellency Lieutenant General Seretse Khama Ian Khama on his succession as President of Botswana on 1 April 2008.  In his inaugural address, the President outlined the principles of democracy, development, dignity and discipline as the foundation of   “his roadmap for the nation.”

DITSHWANELO believes that adherence to these principles is critical for the comprehensive construction of the seven (7) pillars of Vision 2016 as this will enable the participation, inclusion and enjoyment of  prosperity by all Batswana.  These principles are in accordance with the human rights- based approach to development for which DITSHWANELO has, and continues to advocate.

Although the President’s reference to development focused on the products of development reflected by infrastructural expansion and job creation, we are hopeful that the balancing of the principles of democracy, dignity and discipline as outlined by him, will ensure that development processes are people-centred.  This will holistically move national development in a direction in which people are able to develop to their full potential.

DITSHWANELO welcomes the commitment of President Khama to addressing challenges which affect the dignity of Batswana.  As the cornerstone of a human rights culture, upholding dignity is essential for the achievement of democracy, people-centred development and disciplined, responsible exercise of human rights.

The President’s pledged vision for the Public Service shows that he is committed to results-based management.  Such an accountable Public Service is critical to the rights-based development paradigm as public servants are major duty bearers towards the nation.  An accountable and committed Public Service will create an enabling environment in order for all peoples in Botswana to lead meaningful and productive lives.

This inaugural address gives DITSHWANELO hope that Botswana is entering an era of visionary and transformative leadership characterised by people-centred sustainable development.  In this regard, DITSHWANELO remains committed to working with the Government and peoples of Botswana in promoting, protecting and fulfilling the human rights of all Batswana.
